-ne Today started off not too good. So for now I can still drive it by doing a little trick to get it started, but I’m going to have to get the starter replaced very soon.Also one of the signal bulbs burnt out, so I ended up replacing that myself.

It’s just that, at yesterday’s West Met Prospect handicap race, Merv didn’t.My Year 2 Uni statistics course showed me conclusively that you cannot derive a mean, modal or median average from a range of numbers which are outside the average. For example: my handicap time had me down for an estimated 8:10 min run over the 2k. Interesting, however my fastest run this year on all courses has been 8.16 min. My time over the exact same course on 24/06 was 9:14 min. My mean average time (across 11 races this season) was 9:13 min. I got a go time of 4:20 min, meaning my estimated finish time was 8:10 min as the first runner went at 12:30 min.My son, with a season’s mean average of 8:07 min, got a 7:30 min estimate, or go time of 5:00 min. He finished way behind me in 14:00 min from go, meaning a net time of 9:00 min. I finished in 13:22 min, or net time of 9:02 min (12 second PB).

Instant Aging – Mike Timlin, Alan Embree, Julian Tavarez and Keith Foulke all saw abrupt changes in their performance level. I’m excited about him, he throws hard, can change things up with a good 12-6 curveball and has the potential to be very very good.Based on all this, the Sox have some potential problems in Romero, Donnelly and Timlin (the instant aging thing could get worse with Timlin).

A study of thousands of men and women revealed that those who stick to a vegetarian diet have IQs that are around five points higher than those who regularly eat meat. Writing in the British Medical Journal, the researchers say it isn’t clear why veggies are brainier - but admit the fruit and veg-rich vegetarian diet could somehow boost brain power. Researcher Dr Catharine Gale said there could be several explanations for the findings, including intelligent people being more likely to consider both animal welfare issues and the possible health benefits of a vegetarian diet. Dr Gale said: ‘Although our results suggest that children who are more intelligent may be more likely to become vegetarian as adolescents or young adults, it does not rule out the possibility that such a diet might have some beneficial effect on subsequent cognitive performance. ‘Maybe that explains why many meat-reducers are keen to call themselves vegetarians when even they must know that vegetarians don’t eat chicken, turkey or fish!’ SourceVegetarianism is almost solely a bourgeois preoccupation and, as Murray and Herrnstein showed long ago, the middle and upper classes have an IQ advantage.

Be aware that many owners just won’t consider lets of less than three days, whatever price you offer.Most main tourist destinations have tourist offices that may have some favoured apartments, you’ll see plenty of signs along the roadside and there’s normally a coven of matriarchs with placards, hovering around arriving ferries at the larger towns. You normally won’t be asked to pay until the end, normally in cash, but expect to leave your passports with the owner.We’ve stayed in plenty of apartments around Croatia, always had plenty of choice and never had a bad experience, though some have been better than others. Obviously, if you’re travelling with young children, or a large family, you may want to exchange the additional choice and value for money for the peace of mind of a confirmed apartment booked with a reputable company that specialises in Croatia.Finally, note that the tourist season is still very short and the majority of apartments are not available outside July and August.

On the outskirts of town, south of the Sava River, is “New Zagreb” with a large exhibition area and several business parks.The central square, Trg Bana Josip Jelačića links all three city centre areas and is the place to go whenever there’s a celebration, whether it be a national holiday or the return of a triumphant sports team. Try not to miss the four squares that run north to south in the west part of the business area and include the impressive National Theatre Building (see Thursday’s photo).Hotels in the centre can be quite expensive and we’ve generally stayed in Karlovac, about 40 minutes drive from Zagreb, or in the hotel Laguna, just south of the town centre, http://www.hotel-laguna.hr/. If parks are more your thing, the Botanical Gardens are in the centre of town and Maksimir Park, also the home of Zagreb’s Zoo, claims to be the largest and most beautiful park in south east Europe.Just north of Zagreb is Medvednica, a forested protected nature park with many miles of hiking paths and a ski centre at the highest peak, Sljeme. Further out are some fascinating old towns and the spectacular Plitvice National Park with its many lakes.How to Get ThereBy AirZagreb Airport is 17 kilometers from the city centre and the trip is about half an hour by car.

Anyway, as we walked from the terminal to board this little bitty plane, I could see bike cases being boarded, and when the flight attendant asked if we’d rather have our clothes get there or the bikes - the overwhelming consensus was the bikes because clothes are cheap!Now, sitting here almost 24 hours later, my vote for bikes is haunting me…As we deplaned in the very small PCB terminal, we headed over to the baggage claim area (there was just one belt, are you getting an idea of how small this place is??) and waited for our luggage. True to the flight attendant’s words, out came the bikes. Bike case after bike case, probably 20 or 30 in all, one after the other on the carousel. No luggage, except of course the bikes, have made it on our flight to PCB. But the flight attendant assures us that it will probably be on the next flight and they’d bring it to the hotel.The next flight is due to arrive about an hour later, so we decide we’ll just buy some time and come back to the airport to pick it all up. Out comes the luggage and bikes for the later flight. It’s there - the only pink bike racked in a sea of black, silver, blue and red. I head to Registration and Johnny heads back to the airport to wait for the next flight.At registration, I get to talk to so many people who are doing the race. To travel around the world, lugging bikes and gear and wetsuits and running shoes, with only one goal - of becoming an Ironman? They say IM is 90% mental, and I’m starting to understand why.I finish registration, get my official bags for all my yet to be found gear, and head over to the tent that has the stuff you can buy. I get a top, I find some biking shorts (my favorite pair - things are looking up), some goggles, some bodyglide. :-) I decide to head up to the room to check a few work things and as I get into the elevator, my phone rings, its Johnny and he says - guess what I have?

-ne Columbia is a 25.5-point underdog at Harvard TomorrowShort of sneaking Peyton Manning, Tiki Barber, and Shawne Merriman into the game, Columbia will have few opportunities to beat the Crimson in Cambridge tomorrow. What’s so interesting about Harvard’s loss to Princeton is that the Tigers won despite not putting together much of a running game. Princeton ran for just 2.7 yardsa carry in that game, (numbers that are a lot more like what Columbia puts up week after week). Princeton’s passing game did not put up super stats against Harvard, but Tiger QB Jeff Terrell made the big plays when he needed to. But Harvard just has too many weapons, and week 8 is just a little too late to expect any kind of Crimson let down.PREDICTION: Harvard 28 Columbia 10 Yale (-3) at BrownThe Bulldogs super offense hit a bit of a snag last week scoring just one competitive touchdown, (the other two Yale scores were via a defensive touchdown and a garbage time TD), in a 21-3 win at home over Columbia.
link

-ne The Harvard game notes were released last night on the athletic department web site, and they made me wonder about a few things.First, the good news. But I have to add my usual disclaimer: I am not a coach, don’t pretend to be one, and don’t think I’m smarter or better than any coach, (with the exception of Yale’s Jack Siedlecki - pond scum is better than him), out there.SCOUTING HARVARD For the second straight year Columbia is taking on a Harvard team that isn’t in first place in the standings, but still seems like the best team in the league. The key starters for Harvard in that game will all be back on the field Saturday at Harvard Stadium.OFFENSEIt begins and ends with tailback Clifton Dawson. Dawson has been held under 100 yards rushing only twice this year, and one of those games was against Cornell where he still had a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Dawson’s been less of a receiving target this season, as he’s getting about two catches a game.The suspension of 2005 starter Liam O’Hagan for the first five games of this season didn’t hurt that much as the Crimson started 5-0 under backup QB Chris Pizzotti. Those 38 sacks have taken a whopping 242 yards away from opposing teams’ rushing stats, so the Crimson have a stingy 63-yards-per-game rushing yards against average. The Crimson are giving up an average of 233 yards in the air per game, and Princeton QB Jeff Terrell picked the secondary apart at crucial times in Harvard’s only loss. He’s averaging 10.7 yards per return with a long of 38 yards. Other than Dawson’s big return against Cornell, (Dawson has only returned one other kickoff this season), Harvard has been an average kickoff return team.

Array (These screencaps are from All A-Bir-r-r-d,, a Freleng cartoon where Hawkins’ style is noticeably different from that of the regular Freleng animators, with much more freedom of movement.)You can see the contrast between Hawkins and most of the other animators in the Freleng cartoon Golden Yeggs: right after a Gerry Chiniquy scene with Daffy moving rather stiffly, Hawkins takes over, with a freely moving, shape-shifting Daffy.Some of this may reflect the fact that Hawkins had worked at Disney, where the animation was very fluid and had characters in constant motion, rather than the jerkier, more pronounced movements of typical WB animation. we can’t really see some of the ways his body changes shape (even Bugs’s hat changes shape sometimes), but we can sense it, and it makes the scene funnier without calling undue attention to its own cleverness, as wacky animation too often does.Perhaps the best-known cartoon that Hawkins worked on is Chuck Jones’ Rabbit of Seville, where Hawkins animated the opening scene and Bugs’s drag scene.Robert McKimsonTo plagiarize a bit from my previous post on McKimson the director: Before he became a successful director, McKimson was one of the best and most influential animators at the studio. He made characters a bit taller and sleeker than other animators did, moved them a bit slower than usual to bring out the detail of their bodies’ motion (he would have the whole body slowly move while a character was talking, rather than just sort of jerking them from pose to pose as Gerry Chiniquy did), and he was very careful about making sure that a character’s gestures and body language were of a piece with what the character was thinking or feeling: in a scene like this (from A Tale of Two Kitties), the positioning of the characters’ bodies, arms, and hands is carefully worked out to show which character in control in the scene. Or in the cheater cartoon Whats Cookin Doc?, when Bugs Bunny shape-shifts into various celebrities, everything about the way he’s drawn — eyes, ears, body language — is appropriate to the parody and to the character of Bugs, with imaginative transitions from the animation of regular Bugs to the animation of shape-shifted Bugs;

The best answer I can come up with is a system from my high school football days, and I say, We used a man-on-man system. I want to jump up and stand on the cramping but endure the torture of my toes and the torture of the smoke and the torture of the lie when suddenly he blurts, You’re no fucking waiter. And to pay him back for torturing me I point to his cigarette and say, Those things are gonna kill you, and he says, I don’t give a rat’s ass. I don’t know if I’ll ever become a photographer but I know I won’t become — I won’t ever become a houseman and for damn sure I’ll never become an indoor houseman.

-ne This week I’ve been thinking a lot about Brazil, where agri-business concentrations os wealth drive peasants into cities without services or jobs. After Almost Brothers, I was walking with my film-going companions - all of whom had seen Bus 174 the year before, and one, a corporate lawyer, asked his high-school friend, the human-rights lawyer, why is Brazil like that? At the end of the article, one of those crazed right-wingers argued that the problems in Brazil and Latin-America in general could be traced to left wing governments (the article clearly suggests that the problems can be traced to the power of the United States and the IMF). Of course in Brazil, social programs are pretty limted, because so much of their spending is dedicated to debt payments, and so much of the aid they receive from foreign banks is contingent on privatization and austerity. If the US treasury bonds start looking less attractive, and if the Grover Norquists get their way when it comes to US social programs, I wonder how long it would be before South Central Los Angeles became as impenetrable as some of the favelas in Rio.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/commentary/20050623-084159-4767r.htmWashington TimesJune 24, 2005 Pg. 18Debunking Another Gitmo MythBy Michelle MalkinNewsweek. Amnesty International. Jimmy Carter. Dick Durbin. The Guantanamo Bay-bashing continues.In a rant published Tuesday, the Minnesota Star Tribune actually castigated Mr. Durbin for caving in on his slanderous remarks comparing U.S. treatment of detainees at Gitmo to torture and genocide by Nazis, Soviets and Pol Pot. The paper wrote Mr. Durbin shouldn’t have apologized and decried the entire operation as a hellhole.But it’s not just unhinged liberals who keep piling on.The comparison of Gitmo to the genocidal operations of the fascist left (Nazis, Soviets and Khmer Rouge) is, to put it simply, deranged.Maverick Sen. John McCain echoed one of the left’s most oft-cited and erroneous Gitmo complaints on NBC’s Meet The Press this weekend — that detainees have been denied trials:The weight of evidence has got to be that weve got to adjudicate these peoples cases, and … if it means releasing some of them, youll have to release them. Look, even Adolf Eichmann got a trial.” (Can we put a lid on the Nazi analogies already? A Knight-Ridder reporter was too smitten to be bothered by the Eichmann-invoking hyperbole: “McCain is emerging as a voice of conscience and nuance on the stay-or-go Guantanamo issue.” Nuance?)The adjudication is by military tribunal, when necessary, as spelled-out in the Geneva Convention.Sen. Lindsay Graham, South Carolina Republican and another newly christened “maverick,” appeared on MSNBCs Hardball last week, lodging similar allegations about the lack of trials for Gitmo detainees:We need a procedure and process that will allow us to determine who an enemy combatant is, interrogate them to make us safer in a humane way, and set up trials for the worst offenders and repatriate those who — who don’t meet the category of a threat. That, to me, would look good to the world. It would make us safer.Sen. Graham is correct and incorrect. We do need such a procedure and process, however, we already have one.My friend, Judge Andrew Napolitano, made a similar assertion on Fox News “OReilly Factor last week: The government is not giving them those trials.And now, the facts:Every single detainee currently held at Guantanamo Bay has received a hearing before a military tribunal. Every one. As a result of those hearings, more than three dozen Gitmo detainees have been released. The hearings, called Combatant Status Review Tribunals, are held before a board of officers, and permit the detainees to contest the facts on which their classification as enemy combatants is based.Gitmo-bashers attack the Bush administration’s failure to abide by the Geneva Conventions. But as legal analysts Lee Casey and Darin Bartram told me, The status hearings are, in fact, fully comparable to the Article V hearings required by the Geneva Conventions, in situations where those treaties apply, and are also fully consistent with the Supreme Courts 2004 decision in the Hamdi v. Rumsfeld case.”Treating foreign terrorists like American shoplifters — with full access to civilian lawyers, classified intelligence, and all the attendant rights of a normal jury trial — is a surefire recipe for another September 11. That is why the Bush administration fought so hard to erect an alternative tribunal system — long established in wartime — in the first place.The few critics who acknowledge existence of the tribunals argue they arent sufficient. They provided due process in form, but not in substance, as Newsday put it. That view is shared by a Carter-appointed liberal judge, but an earlier decision by a Bush-appointed judge upheld the tribunals. In the end, courts will almost certainly affirm the legality of the Gitmo tribunals, which, as noted, were modeled after the due process standards described in the Hamdi decision.That ruling, may I remind you, addressed detention of a U.S. citizen as an enemy combatant. As former Attorney General William Barr noted last week in testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Obviously, if these procedures are sufficient for American citizens, they are more than enough for foreign detainees.Do John McCain and the anti-Gitmo gang actually believe otherwise, or are they too clueless to realize the implications of their gulag-Pol-Pot-Nazi-Eichmann-hellhole harangues?Michelle Malkin is a nationally syndicated columnist.I would have expected better of Sen. McCain. The hyperbole is beneath him.
